This project is one of the most remarkable transformations we have undertaken. What started as a modest 1970s split level that would not have been out of place in any suburb was recreated as a comfortable and flowing country estate home.
More than for most of our projects, there was a question of whether to tear down or renovate. A significant factor was the need of the family to life and work on the property over the period of construction. This required some careful planning in the design stages to be able to manage.
Construction started with the partitioning of the living room and old kitchen to support the family on site. The new kitchen was constructed and prepared for use, and finally the old kitchen was converted into a master bedroom.
A central post and beam truss extends from the front to back of a new section, angled at a 45ยบ angle and extending from entrance to back deck. In addition to the new kitchen, a new living room and dining room has been constructed. The last wing is a garage and mud-wing, with a bump in roofline over the garage that balances the rooflines of the original house.
The central sections of the new development are brick construction that extends into and replaces the facade of the original entrance. Each side wing of the house is clad in board-and-batten siding, creating balance and holistically bringing together the appearance of the various sections of house together.
The result is a house that has been radically transformed. The kernel of the original house remains, with very different form and function that will continue to meet the needs of its growing family.
