Not every renovation is extensive. Not every renovated house is old.
The owner of this modern bungalow sought an entryway and front porch area framed by traditional post-and-beam construction. The desire was for a front entrance that replaced basic posts with a timber frame structure that was prominent and attractive.
The constraints in doing was were extensive. The timber frame structure needed to work with the existing foundations and seamlessly integrate into the existing structure and roofline of the house. This required extensive measurement of the existing structure and the construction of temporary supports that would allow the timbers to readily slide in and assume the structural load.
Timbers were cut, hand-adzed and stained offsite to create a natural-looking and traditional beam. Each component pillar, beam and brace was carefully cut and hewn to tightly form the overall structure. Timbers were assembled on-site and pinned together, using proper post-and-beam construction techniques. The assembled structures were carefully slid into the existing roofline and structure, assuming the load and providing a finished structure that looks timelines and elegant.
