Old farmhouses are beautiful, but were designed for a different time and lifestyle. The goal of this project was to update a two-story brick house to introduce some additional living features.
A particular focus of this project was creating spaces to accommodate an indoor and outdoor lifestyle. This included spaces for outdoor entertaining and a porch for cooking.
A wrap-around screened porch created a large outdoor space that integrated the former back door. Removable screens provide the flexibility to exchange them for glass. An exterior porch and stairs create a transition to the garden and provide space for a gas barbecue. A new mudroom completes the addition, provided space and storage to transition from outside to indoors.
The lines of the addition were designed to integrate with the existing structure, with board-and-batten siding on the mudroom and timber beams framing the screened-in porch. New metal roofing echoes the lines and replicates the materials of the existing structure.
A new out-building with three-bay garage completed the project, and leverages the same design cues as the addition. Designing the project meant working through challenges to deal with setbacks and allowances while delivering on the overall goals. The result is a modernized residence that welcomes the outdoors in.
