The house is the hub of any working farm. The goal of this project was a new home for a young family with a thriving livestock operation.
The building site was chosen to take advantage of south-facing views, to welcome as much natural light as possible. A natural slope provides walkout access for a self-contained lower suite. Extensive landscape planning and a terraced retaining wall connects front and rear, and provides support for a carport.
The design concept echoes the traditional one-and-a-half storey Ontario stone farmhouse, with cues also showing up in a planned future garage. A soaring turret creates a unique living space on each level, and a second-floor deck wraps around three sides for extensive outdoor entertain space.
Interior finishes included in-floor heating on all three levels, broad white-oak plank flooring, a custom kitchen and timbered coffer ceilings in the turret spaces.
Brick construction in a neutral grey helps to highlight the natural cedar siding cladding the third level and gables. Cedar shakes on the steep-pitched roof create a classic, weather and durable appearance. The result is a brand new home that nods to tradition and will stand the test of time.
