A welcoming vacation home that draws on traditional east coast architectural style. The goal of this project was the construction of a new beach house for a family of four overlooking the water.
The design cues of this house are inspired by traditional east coast structures, and in particular shingle style architecture. A timber-framed gable canopy creates a large and welcome entrance to the foyer and open plan living area. Its shape is echoed in the dormers and gables on each elevation, giving the second floor bedrooms and bathroom a cozy and intimate feeling.
An extensive wrap-around porch on two sides creates an open-air outdoor living area that can be closed in with motorized phantom screens concealed in the beam structure. The main floor houses the master suite as well as significant entertaining and dining space. Extensive windows overlook the water, and timber frame cathedral ceilings reinforce the generous feeling of openness.
A prominent feature of the living room is the natural stone fireplace surround, housing a wood burning fireplace. The firebox is separated from the room with a motorized guillotine glass door, giving the feel of an open hearth without a traditional screen.
The house is a welcoming retreat, offering comfort and elegance that complements and embraces the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
