Building a dream home that can grow and evolve is a challenge. The goal was construction of a home on a working farm that could grow with the family.
The project had a tight budget. Design for future expansion and evolution was built into the process from the outset. The focus was on a good working layout to meet the current needs of a family of five.
Working within the budget, choices were made to create features that would have an impact. An extra-wide open staircase with a craftsman feel connects support and lower floors. A wider wooden front door and transom creates an elegant welcome. Selective use of stone and natural wood siding create a durable and timeless exterior.
An early construction start revealed that the site has a high water table. Extra sump drainage was incorporated into the foundation to relieve potential groundwater pressure, avoiding the risk of cracks in the foundation slab.
The master plan for the site provides guidance for the future. Additional plans include an attached garage and mudroom. A finished basement will provide more interior space. Larger porches and an outdoor entertaining area are also envisioned. The current roofline was designed to accommodate a future screened-in-porch.
This project is a reflection of how planning can help build a home that affordably meets the needs of today while continuing to provide room to grow.
