Brand New Old Ontario Farmhouse

Brand New Old Ontario Farmhouse

A traditional Ontario one-and-a-half story farmhouse built on a grand scale. The goal was the creation of a modern and spacious interpretation of the traditional farmhouse design.

The owners wanted the flavour of an old Ontario farmhouse with its two-foot-thick walls and classic proportions, updated with modern comforts that go well beyond heating, air conditioning, insulation and modern plumbing.

The core of the house respects the traditional proportions of the original farmhouse design, while extending the dimensions and increasing the usable square footage. Two additional wings were designed, containing a master bedroom suite and an attached garage structure. An additional wing off the back that would traditionally house a summer kitchen provided additional entertaining space, with an extensive great room and kitchen.

Extensive care was taken in identifying and planning the details of the designs. The designer and owner toured countryside looking for inspiration and design cues from original farmhouses. Details including capstones, lintels, windowsills and fireplace mouldings trace back to examples that were discovered in their travels.

Approximately sixty percent of the stones were reclaimed from old farmhouses and barns, with the remainder sourced from quarries in northern Ontario and Quebec. These newer materials were integrated into the overall design to match required size and colour. Matching chimneys, a wrap-around porch and extensive retaining walls create an appearance of centuries-old elegance in a brand new structure.
