Cedar Deck and Outdoor Kitchen

Cedar Deck and Outdoor Kitchen

The outdoor access of this modern bungalow was limited, a concrete slab with barbecues and minimal functional space or decor. Open to the elements, use was limited to fair weather days or a willingness to get wet. The goal of this project was to upgrade the exterior space, creating an elevated and functional outdoor living and cooking space.

Work began with removing the existing stone slab. The future site was levelled, and rough-hewn stones were used to shore up the transition to the elevated existing lawn and garden. Post holes were dug for footings and posts to support the deck framing.

Timber frame posts and beam were installed and a cedar header fastened to the house to support a cedar pergola. This was in turn covered with a translucent overhead covering to provide protection from the elements while still allowing sunlight to illuminate the deck area.

Fascia boards and cedar skirting were installed to finish off the under-deck areas, creating a clean and finished appearance, and cedar stairs were constructed to easily transition from the newly installed deck to the existing patio structure.

The result is a flexible, welcoming and usable outdoor living and kitchen area that allows the owners to access their grills and prepare meals in virtually any weather.
