Bringing A Victorian House Outdoors

Bringing A Victorian House Outdoors

This Victorian red brick house had an imposing presence, but limited exterior living space. While the addition of a sun room created additional light and exterior visibility, a very limited deck space severely constrained actual outdoor living space. The goal of this project was the design of a deck that could integrate with the existing sunroom while significantly expanding outdoor entertaining and cooking areas.

The new deck structure was designed to run the full width of the sunroom and beyond, offering significantly more exterior space. Helical piles were used to create the foundations for the new deck structure, supporting the posts and framing structure for the decks. Cedar fascia and vertical skirting boards provide a clean appearance to the deck structure, anchoring it to the surrounding garden.

The main deck affords increased functionality, with space for cooking and dining areas. A framed living area features timber-framed post and beam construction. A cedar pergola and latticework offers shade and intriguing lighting patterns, while still maintaining a feel of airy openness and connection to the outdoors.

Expansion of natural stone shores up a new and expanded garden beneath the deck. Patio pavers of rough-cut stone were assembled in a mosaic to support an expansive picnic table. The result is a usable and attractive multi-level living area that bridges access to the interior sunroom and outside garden and lawns.
