This project is truly unique, featuring a custom-designed two-home bungalow. The goal for this home was an accessible, single-story residence for a multi-generation family. The result is two completely separate living spaces. A shared pool and adjoining family room and sun room provide central gathering and entertaining spaces.
The primary residence features 3,500 square feet of living space, with a large and modern main kitchen and a living room with extensive built-in cabinetry. A spacious kitchen provides ample cooking and entertaining space, with a natural stone backsplash, granite countertops and modern pendant lighting. The adjoining living room features extensive built-in cabinetry, including space and wiring for a flat-screen TV and stereo equipment. A spacious primary bathroom includes a glassed-in shower and a large and modern free-standing soaker tub.
The secondary residence is 2,500 square feet in size. Built as a completely separate adjoining structure, it includes a great room, kitchen and dining room as well as a separate sun room. Primary floor surfacing includes a unique herringbone brick tile in entry areas and sunroom, with white oak flooring throughout. An entryway with custom-designed arched alcoves create space to showcase the owner’s pottery, and leads into a large living area. Arched ceilings in the great room create an open, airy and bright living space. The kitchen is built around an extensive island, providing ample preparation space and extensive cabinet storage.
Joining the two residences is an expansive sunroom and family area. Originally conceived as a screened-in porch, the design evolved into a glassed-in sunroom able to be used year-round. The room is anchored by a Rumsford fireplace, a traditionally graceful and open wood-burning appliance that optimally radiates heat to the room. Windows on two sides and extensive skylights provide ample sunlight. Immediately outside the sunroom is a shared in-ground pool, with easy access to both living structures.
The result is a coherent design that allows this family to share the property, while still enjoying dedicated living spaces for each generation. Exterior cladding featuring brick knee walls and board-and-batten siding offers a consistent and light exterior, while the interior design of each space has been tailored and adapted to the tastes of its occupants.
