The initial requirement was a modern home that would replace an existing Victorian farmhouse on the property. A goal of our design contribution was to prominently integrate structural steel design features.
This farm property came with a Victorian brick home that dated back to the 1890s. The owners wanted a new and modern house, featuring a one-floor living area and fully-finished basement. The existing structure served as their residence during construction, with the intention of tearing it down upon project completion. Because of site constraints, this required a phased development where the front porch could not be completed until demolition of the existing house had occurred.
The design of the house makes extensive use of powder-coated structural steel. Custom-designed and manufactured structural steel elements frame the kitchen and outdoor living area, as well as additional steel framing to support a screened in porch with sliding glass access to the dining room. The main entrance also features structural steel pillars and a curved beam that supports the front porch roof, echoing the larger main archway featured on the porch.
Design of the property combined our understanding of the capabilities of the steel fabricator and collaborative effort to explore how to best translate the desired design features into manufactured and installed components. The result is a truly unique property where the custom structural elements integrate naturally into the overall form and finish of this modern home.
