This unique carriage house was designed from the outset to connect to a planned future stone house. The design includes both functional garage space and an expansive upstairs apartment. This would provide valuable living quarters during house construction, and serve as guest quarters once the larger structure was complete.
The materials and construction were grounded in the client’s appreciation for old farmhouses. The two-foot-thick stone walls on the ground floor provide a solid foundation. Patterns in the stone work for the project create a motif that will repeat in the planned future house. The traditional lap siding of the gable ends that frame the apartment space provide lightness, contrasting well with the natural wood shakes used for the roofing. An octagonal copper cupola serves as an elegant finishing touch to the overall structure.
