New Kitchen on a Budget

New Kitchen on a Budget

The kitchen in this 1970s bungalow was small and cramped. Workspace was minimal and there was comparatively little storage. The appliances, cabinetry and flooring dated back to the construction of the house, and had not been updated since.

The goal of this project was to open up the kitchen to the rest of the house, and increase the usability and workspace of the kitchen.

The owners of the house were a retired couple on a budget. Design of a workable solution involved careful choices about what to include, and the materials to be used. The overall design worked within the constraints of the existing space. The existing plumbing was kept in place, and the windows were not changed out. Modest structural changes included opening up the half wall that separated the kitchen from the main entry area, as well as removing the wall and door leading to the entrance and downstairs staircase.

The result was a significant improvement in layout, flow and usability of the entire main floor space. The kitchen benefits from a significant increase in workable counter space, including around the stove and sink. An island peninsula featuring a panelled wall provides an eating space adjacent to the kitchen. Additional cabinetry provides a coffee bar, pantry and a cabinet for china.

A cubby area was also built in the entry way off of the carport, providing additional storage and a bench to make it easier to put on, remove and store winter clothing.

The finished results clearly demonstrate that even with space constraints and budget limitations, it is possible to significantly enhance the appearance, functionality and usefulness of your kitchen space.
