Balancing an Off-Kilter Bathroom

Balancing an Off-Kilter Bathroom

The bathroom of this century farmhouse had not been renovated since at least the 1970s. The vanity was plywood, and a vintage cast iron tub competed with a walk-in shower that was long past its prime. The new owners wanted to rip it out completely and start over.

Gutting the existing bathroom meant not just going down to the floorboards, but in fact beyond. The house was originally built in the 1870s, and shifting and settling over the subsequent decades and centuries meant the room was far out of level. Beams needed to be planed down or built up by a total of more than four inches to bring the room back into alignment. Plumbing was reconfigured and realigned to improve layout and usability the bathroom.

Vintage cabinets and vanities found by the homeowners were refinished and installed. This included a new marble vanity counter top, as well as vessel sink and in-wall taps and faucets.

The bathroom design finishes with a hexagonal marble floor tile and a subway tile wainscoting. A double line of mosaic subway tiles and a finishing line of marble bullnose trim create visual interest and a classic  appearance. The result is a reconceived and reconfigured bathroom layout with a casually elegant and timeless design.
