Helping a rustic hilltop bungalow realize its full potential. The goal of this project was to open up house, bringing in light and incredible views of the surrounding countryside.
The original house had stunning potential. Situated on a hill top with commanding views, it is surrounded by mature trees. An open great room and living space was constrained minimal exterior views, with only a set of sliding glass doors and a small window providing light and exterior access.
This project significantly opened up the great room. Extensive windows were installed, and the layout of the great room was rethought. Sliding doors were moved to the centre, providing much better flow and access to the outdoors.
The outdoor spaces were also completely reinvented. An old Bavarian-style wood deck was removed, and exterior deck spaces were significantly expanded on multiple levels. Glass railings ensure unimpeded visibility, while new exterior stairs provide access to a significantly new and expansive lower patio area.
Completing the project involved overcoming a number of challenges. The kitchen was relocated on a temporary basis during construction, and would ultimately be replaced by the owner. The steep hillside presented unique hurdles in terms of access. This required creative solutions to bring in equipment as well as install the windows. Extra-deep footings were needed to ensure on-going stability of supports, and concrete for the footings had to be poured by hand.
The result is a much brighter interior with exceptional and expansive views, and the creation of new outdoor living spaces that integrate well with the surrounding areas.
